Neyland Stadium field condition a slippery subject for South Carolina
Neyland Stadium is one of college football’s iconic venues, but the playing surface at Tennessee’s home stadium left at least one South Carolina player shaking his head after Saturday’s game it seems.
“Tennessee football field is sorry....slippery (expletive) surface.... Not any good for football!” was posted on Gamecocks center Alan Knott’s Twitter page after the Gamecocks’ 27-24 loss to Tennessee.
Several Gamecocks and Volunteers slipped during the game, and South Carolina interim coach Shawn Elliott said he was “surprised” by the footing when he examined the field before the game.
“I was out there in pregame, and I noticed the field kind of tearing up,” Elliott said. “I asked if Under Armour made a different kind of cleat. There were several times we had some footing issues, and I was very surprised by that. The playing surface wasn’t the fault of anything, but we did slip around a little bit.”
ESPN produced this video clip about the slippery conditions.
The Volunteers had not played at home since Oct. 10. There was no rain during Saturday’s game, and the field appeared to be mostly dry before the game.
Tennessee DE Derek Barnett said Tennessee's field was "really slippery." Said he switched shoes at halftime.
