Former South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson will suit up for his first NFL regular-season game on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Saturday that Thompson has been promoted to the active roster from the practice squad. The team placed quarterbck Colin Kaepernick on the injured reserve list.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Thompson said. “Nothing but praise for Jesus knowing He would put me in this spot when He wanted to.”

Thompson (6-3, 218) signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent.

A 24-year-old native of Boiling Springs, Thompson set a South Carolina single-season record with 3,564 passing yards last season. He will wear No. 13 for the 49ers.

San Francisco plays at Seattle at 4:25 p.m. Sunday.
