Elliott confirms he’s staying with Gamecocks
South Carolina’s new football staff will have a familiar face – former interim coach Shawn Elliott.
Elliott confirmed to The State he was staying at USC as offensive line coach on Saturday, answering “Yes” to each question. He was checking out state championship weekend during the Gamecocks’ recruiting weekend, with head coach Will Muschamp and running backs coach Bobby Bentley also in and out of the stadium.
Elliott had been reported to have been retained, and had been out recruiting since Muschamp was named head coach on Monday. There was a possibility that Elliott could be considered for the head coaching spot at East Carolina, but the Pirates appear to have moved on.
Elliott went 1-5 as the Gamecocks’ interim coach after Steve Spurrier retired, and expressed his desire to remain a Gamecock.
Muschamp has only made two hires official – Bentley and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson. It has been reported that former defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson will be on staff in some capacity.
South Carolina will add Jeff Dillman as its director of football strength and conditioning, a source told The State on Saturday. Dillman was Muschamp’s strength director at Florida. He has worked with Tommy Moffitt at LSU and Scott Cochran at Alabama. Dillman spent the 2001 season as an assistant to Cochran at Alabama. Dillman will replace Joe Connolly.
