Jerri Spurrier joins list of South Carolina graduates
Eight members of South Carolina’s football team graduated from the school Monday, but they weren’t the only Gamecock alums to earn a degree this week. Jerri Spurrier, who celebrated her 49th wedding anniversary with former head coach Steve Spurrier earlier this year, graduated this week with a degree in psychology.
“I am very proud that I have my diploma,” Spurrier told The State. “It’s kind of wonderful for me that I have that. Now this is my school.”
Spurrier did not participate in Monday’s graduation ceremonies because she and Steve Spurrier were in New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but she plans to attend a separate ceremony next year.
“I’m going to walk,” she said.
Jerri Spurrier took classes throughout most of her husband’s 10-and-a-half seasons at South Carolina, attending classes on campus in the fall and taking online courses in the spring. She did not attend her husband’s resignation press conference in October because she was in a class, he said.
“I got to go to class with the players, which was the best part,” Jerri Spurrier said.
It is the third degree for mother of four and grandmother of 13. She earned degrees in physiology and education during the 12 years Steve Spurrier coached at Florida. She has also taken classes at Durham Tech in Durham, N.C., and Hillsboro Community College in Tampa, Fla., during Steve Spurrier’s coaching career.
“I have never stopped going to school really,” she said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I have to do something though.”
