Will Muschamp fires longtime USC equipment manager
Longtime South Carolina equipment manager Chris Matlock was dismissed Friday along with his staff, Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp told The State on Friday.
Matlock, who did not return a phone call seeking comment, came to South Carolina under then-head coach Lou Holtz in 2000. He had served under Holtz as Notre Dame’s head strength coach for eight seasons prior to joining the Gamecocks.
Muschamp declined to elaborate on his decision.
“I don’t have any comment,” he said.
Matlock also worked for the Indianapolis Colts. He has served on the board of directors for the Palmetto Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during his time in Columbia. He and his staff worked for Muschamp throughout spring practice, including during the spring game. He is the second long-serving support staff member to be dismissed during the transition from former head coach Steve Spurrier to Muschamp, who previoulsy let go team chaplain Adrian Despres.
