The San Francisco 49ers released former South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson Friday afternoon after one season with the team.

Thompson was among four players cut as the team announced the signing of 12 undrafted free agents.

Thompson was on the 49ers practice squad the first nine weeks of last year before being promoted to the active roster Week 10. He did not play in a regular season game for San Francisco.

Thompson was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent after spending five years at South Carolina.

He told The State the move was not unexpected after San Francisco drafted quarterback Jeff Driskel in the sixth round last weekend.

“I wasn’t really surprised with it happening,” he said. “With them drafting a quarterback that gave us five and I knew that there was a chance I could be released.”

The former Boiling Springs quarterback passed for 3,564 yards in 2014 at USC, breaking the single season school record.

Thompson filled in for Connor Shaw during parts of 2012 and 2013, leading the Gamecocks to a win at Clemson in 2012 and throwing the game-winning touchdown pass in an Outback Bowl win over Michigan to close out that year.

Thompson said he is unsure what the next move for he and his wife, Melanie, will be.

“As always Melanie and I will trust God and be ready to be used wherever He puts us next,” Thompson said. “We are grateful for the opportunity and excited for the next one that comes our way.”
