Where does Gamecocks incoming freshman WR Kiel Pollard fit?
Getting wide receiver Kiel Pollard out of Georgia was a big recruiting coup for South Carolina.
Where he fits is far less clear.
The Gamecocks exited spring practice with only five players listed in six spots on the wide receiver depth chart. A true freshman will almost certainly have to step in somewhere, and with Bryan Edwards already in that group, Pollard seems, from the outside, the next logical candidate.
But even his position coach Bryan McClendon said there isn’t a spot the staff sees him quickly fitting into.
“It’s easy to sit up here and see kind of on film certain things,” McClendon said. “One thing that helps is I had Kiel at camp when I was at Georgia. So I’m real familiar with what he can do and what he can’t do. I think he has the skillset to be effective anywhere at the receiver position.”
Pollard has a build that doesn’t fit archetypes.
He’s 6-feet, not particularly tall, but weighs 232 pounds. He isn’t necessarily a burner, reportedly running a 4.6 40-yard dash. If he ends up at inside receiver, he’ll be pretty thick. If he works on the outside, he’ll be on the shorter side.
None of that limited him as he collected 1,163 receiving yards and 18 scores as a senior at powerhouse Colquitt County, plus he doubled as a goal-line running back with 13 scores. For that, he was named Offensive Player of the Year in Georgia’s largest class.
Where he lands will get sorted out when he arrives on campus, and his coaches are keeping one key factor in mind.
“The biggest thing that you want to make sure that you’re doing, and it’s not just him, but anybody, is you’re putting guys in position where you feel like they can do a great job of winning those one-on-one matchups,” McClendon said. “Wherever that may be, it may be.”
