Former South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus is expected to join the coaching staff at South Carolina State this season.

The expected hiring was first reported The Times and Democrat newspaper in Orangeburg. S.C. State head coach Buddy Pough would not confirm the decision when reached by The State on Friday.

“Nothing is official,” Pough said.

Mangus would be the final member of Steve Spurrier’s 2015 Gamecocks coaching staff to find a job for this season. He coached quarterbacks for Spurrier for seven seasons. Prior to joining South Carolina’s staff, Mangus coached at Middle Tennessee State, Delaware State, Ursinus and Widener. He played quarterback for Spurrier at Florida.

The Bulldogs have an offensive coordinator in Nygel Pearson but do have an opening on their offensive coaching staff. Former Spurrier assistant Kirk Botkin already has joined the S.C. State staff this offseason as defensive coordinator.

Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott was the only Spurrier assistant retained by new Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp. Lorenzo Ward is now Fresno State’s defensive coordinator, Jon Hoke is coaching the secondary for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Deke Adams is defensive line coach at East Carolina, Steve Spurrier Jr. has an off-field position at Oklahoma, Everette Sands is the running backs coach at the University of Texas in San Antonio and Joe Robinson is the special teams at Texas Tech.
