Muschamp: Door open to play up to three QBs

First-year South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said there is no set date on naming a starting quarterback and that the Gamecocks “will go as long as they need to go” before picking a starter.

“The door is open to play up to three quarterbacks,” Muschamp said at USC Media Day on Monday.

All the quarterbacks -- including Lorenzo Nunez -- will be evaluated in everything, he said.

Senior Perry Orth and freshmen Brandon McIlwain and Jake Bentley are the other candidates.

McIlwain progressed "extremely well" from first practice to the last spring practice, the head coach said. And Muschamp said he had reports that McIlwain had an outstanding summer.

Muschamp said the staff will have to make a lot of decisions early to see what the players can do, then go forward with a scheme.

"Do what your players can do," he said. “We’ve got a lot of youth and inexperience. The work ethic and energy has been pleasing, though.

"We're excited to get started. We can't wait to get on the field tomorrow."
