USC’s Deebo Samuel shows his personality in his clothing
South Carolina receiver Deebo Samuel is described by those who know him best as humble and quiet, but his fashion sense is anything but.
The Chapman High product takes pride in the outfits he wears and enjoys dressing up for different occasions. It’s something he has done for years and become known for during his time in Columbia.
“There’s no doubt he’s always thought he was pretty,” Chapman receivers coach and Samuel’s friend Steven Fusaro said. “Coming through here he’d always be dressed to the max. It’s surprising knowing how humble he is and soft-spoken he is, but it’s almost like his clothing is his alter-ego.”
Samuel gets advice from his stepmom, Precious Martin, on what to wear. The two will often do live video chats and she will help him pick out outfits.
Martin isn’t sure if Samuel needs the help, but she definitely enjoys the experience.
“I love it. It makes me feel like he needs me,” she said. “I can’t get enough of it. I don’t know if he does it more for me or more for him.”
Samuel was named the best dressed player at SEC Media Days by ESPN reporter Greg Ostendorf after sporting a blue jacket with a plaid pattern that matched his shirt.
Samuel also had on a bowtie that was mostly garnet that matched his pocket square.
“That’s his personality,” Chapman head coach Mark Hodge said. “He likes to have fun. He’s always got a huge smile. Teachers love him. I don’t know that I’ve been around anyone who doesn’t like him.”
While Martin often helps Samuel pick out clothes, she didn’t have much say in the outfit he wore to the Gamecock Gala in April.
Samuel was the talk of the event, wearing a bright red suit with a red bowtie and black shirt.
“He did that on his own,” Martin said with a laugh. “He was home and went shopping and came home and showed me that suit. I said, ‘Tyshun, where are you going to wear this?’ He said, ‘I don’t know.’ But it looked good on him.”
