The unseen statistic that’s helping turn South Carolina’s fortunes around

There’s an obscure statistic that through two games of South Carolina’s football season is not getting much attention outside the building, but almost certainly is a point of pride within it.

The Gamecocks have allowed only seven points in the fourth quarter this season, that on a touchdown by N.C. State with 12:21 left in the fourth quarter of the season opener.

For starters, that’s a big improvement for a team that gave up 77 points in the fourth quarter last year. Particularly this week, it’s a big deal. During Kentucky’s three-game winning streak against South Carolina, the Wildcats have outscored the Gamecocks 30-16 in the fourth quarter.

In all, the Gamecocks have outscored their opponents 31-10 in the second half this year after being outscored 150-128 after halftime last year.
