When Will Muschamp was a player at Georgia, his Bulldogs were 0-3 against Tennessee during a nine-game winning streak by the Volunteers over the Bulldogs.
As a head coach, Muschamp has gotten his revenge on Tennessee. South Carolina’s third-year head coach is 6-0 all-time against the Volunteers. Muschamp hasn’t beaten any team more than the Volunteers, and they are the only SEC East team to whom he has never lost.
While the series has been lopsided, the games have not been generally. In the last three meetings, Muschamp has prevailed by a total of 10 points. His average margin of victory is 6.8 points in the six wins.
In 2013, Florida lost to Georgia Southern but beat Tennessee. In 2016, South Carolina turned around its season with an upset of then-No. 18 Tennessee. Last year, the Volunteers threw three straight incomplete passes from the Gamecocks 2-yard line in the final minute of the game in a 15-9 South Carolina victory.
This year, the Gamecocks are 7.5-point favorites to extend Muschamp’s winning streak.
This year will also mark the third head coach in orange Muschamp has faced. Muschamp was 2-0 against Derek Dooley and 4-0 against Butch Jones. This year, he will face Jeremy Pruitt, who like him is a former Nick Saban defensive coordinator.
