South Carolina starts its first practice under Will Muschamp on March 15. The State will take the 15 days of the month leading up to that to look at 15 “keys” for the Gamecocks as they prepare for Muschamp’s first season.

South Carolina released a depth chart Monday, one day before it holds its first spring practice under new coach Will Muschamp.

Putting players in a pecking order is no easy job for a coaching staff (save offensive line coach Shawn Elliott, the only holdover from Steve Spurrier’s staff) that has never stepped onto even the practice field with them.

The depth chart is based “a little off film and a lot of our offseason program, the kind of work ethic they have displayed,” Muschamp said. “First impressions are really, really good or really, really bad. One or the other. A guy’s competitive edge says a lot to me. It doesn’t really matter if it’s the offseason program or spring practice No. 1, you are either a competitor or you’re not. You can’t turn that on and off. You either compete or you don’t, and some of our guys need to learn to compete a little bit more.”

The depth chart is “very fluid,” Muschamp said, and now that spring practice has almost arrived, the new coach and his staff will get a chance to which players’ positive qualities best translate onto the field.

The Gamecocks begin spring practice. New coach Will Muschamp previews the weeks ahead for the team.
