Demetrius Henry to transfer from Gamecocks
Demetrius Henry is done at South Carolina.
Henry tweeted Tuesday that he was transferring, thanking coach Frank Martin for the opportunity to play at USC and the fans for their support.
Martin still has not decided on the status of Shamiek Sheppard, who was suspended with Henry on Feb. 17 for conduct detrimental to the team. Neither played in the Gamecocks’ final nine games.
Henry, a rising junior, and Sheppard, a rising sophomore, were suspended before a game at Georgia on Feb. 17.
Henry, a 6-foot-9 forward/center, averaged 6.0 points and 3.6 rebounds last year. The No. 100 overall prospect in the country, Henry fought foul trouble and inconsistent shooting throughout his two years at USC.
The Gamecocks played with one open scholarship last year, and another opened with senior Ty Johnson’s departure. With four scholarships claimed – P.J. Dozier, Chris Silva, Travon Bunch and Jamall Gregory, who was accepted into school on Wednesday – USC was up to 15, with 13 allowed by the NCAA.
Henry’s transfer leaves USC at one over the limit, but Martin is still recruiting. Junior-college center Conor Clifford visited USC during the spring game and said he had a great time, and New Jersey guard Malik Ellison visited USC this past weekend. West Virginia forward Dikembe Dixson could visit USC soon.
Dreher High School star Tevin Mack is also back on the market after receiving his release from VCU. Mack picked the Rams over USC, among others.
