Martins host another successful ‘B-Ball of the South’ event
Resplendent in a white suit, complete with matching shoes, pink bowtie and pocket square, Frank Martin was asked which game he’d wear it for next season.
“Have you seen the way I sweat?” he asked.
Martin and his wife, Anya, hosted their third “B-Ball of the South” event on Friday at Colonial Life Arena. The men were clad in seersucker, plaid and pastel, while the ladies wore sundresses and hats, the party that gives all proceeds to Coaches vs. Cancer was another success.
The Martins have raised nearly $270,000 during the first two years of the event and had a sold-out crowd this year. Attendees included coaches Tubby Smith (Texas Tech) and Brad Underwood (Stephen F. Austin and former Martin assistant) plus ESPN insider Jeff Goodman, each showing up in their best.
Styled after the Kentucky Oaks, the party showed the race on the arena’s videoboard. Camaraderie and dancing were grand, the cause was outstanding.
“This is what it’s all about,” said Underwood, who served one year under Martin at USC before heading to SFA, where he’s made two straight NCAA tournament appearances. “(Martin’s) one of my dear friends and will be for life. When he asks, whatever I’m doing, I’m here. We were only here for 10 months but fell in love with it.”
The Martins began the function when Anya’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. This year’s event had a tribute to her, with each guest asked to wear something pink with their outfit.
Anya, the head of the event, was pleased with the turnout and anxious to upgrade it next year.
“I definitely think that coming up with new ideas makes it better,” she said. “We just have to keep thinking of different ways to make it happen.”
