Gamecocks make appearance just outside the field in ESPN Bracketology
South Carolina basketball fell just short of a resume-boosting win Wednesday against Mississippi State. But that didn’t stop the Gamecocks from moving into a spot close to the field in ESPN’s Bracketology.
Joe Lunardi put the Gamecocks in his “next four out” in his Friday bracketology update. USC is in that group along with Stanford, Arkansas and Alabama.
The group of last four out is Purdue, Mississippi State, Providence and Georgetown.
The Gamecocks have won eight of their past 11 games with victories against Kentucky at home and Arkansas on the road. They have three Quad 1 NET wins, but also losses to Stetson and Boston University weighing them down.
Overall, Lunardi’s field only has four SEC teams in it: LSU, Kentucky, Auburn and Florida.
Losing at Mississippi State meant missing one of three remaining Quad 1 chances this season. The Gamecocks will host LSU, which sits at No. 30 in the NET, on Saturday.
South Carolina has not made the NCAA tournament since 2017, when it broke a 14-year drought. It has already clinched its fifth consecutive .500 or better season.
