Former Gamecock PJ Dozier earns full NBA contract in time for restarted season
When the NBA resumes next month in Orlando, PJ Dozier will be on the Denver Nuggets roster.
The Nuggets are signing the former Spring Valley and South Carolina standout to a full NBA contract, Dozier’s father told The State on Wednesday.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania was the first to report the news. The Athletic is reporting that it will be a multi-year contract for Dozier.
Dozier was a two-way player rotating from the G-League and Nuggets before the league shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic. In 21 games for Denver, he averaged 4.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
The 6-foot-6 former McDonald’s All-American had a season-high 15 points against Houston on Jan. 22.
Playing for the Windy City Bulls, the Nuggets’ G-League affiliate, Dozier averaged 21.4 points, 7.7 assists and 7.7 rebounds a game. He was promoted to Denver Nuggets on Jan. 14.
Dozier, a member of USC’s 2017 Final Four team, spent time with the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder organization. In 2019, he earned All-NBA G League honors after averaging 21.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists over 46 games for the Maine Red Claws.
The NBA resumes July 30 with all games being played at the Disney World complex. Denver begins the restarted season with a 43-22 record and is in third place in the Western Conference.
Dozier is one of two former Gamecocks on NBA full contracts. Chris Silvia is in his first season with the Miami Heat and appeared in 41 games, averaging 2.9 points a game. Miami is 41-24 and in fourth-place in Eastern Conference.
