On the eve of the early signing period, the South Carolina men’s basketball team landed a firm commitment.

Daniel Hankins-Sanford, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward from Julius Chambers High in Charlotte, announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he is “110% committed” to the Gamecocks.

The early signing period for basketball begins Wednesday, and Hankins-Sanford joins a 2022 class that also includes in-state guard Zachary Davis, who committed to USC in June.

Hankins-Sanford is a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and averaged 21.4 points and 9.9 rebounds in seven games for the Cougars last season.

He took his official visit to Columbia the weekend the Vanderbilt football game.

“I feel like I fit in (Martin’s) system, Hankins-Sanford said after the visit. “I feel like I fit in what he’s trying to do over there at South Carolina. He’s a great coach, somebody that I have I trust in. I know I can meet the demands on the defensive end; that’s not a concern. The offensive game is not a concern either. Just a little touching up on areas here and there.”

Head coach Frank Martin couldn’t speak in detail Monday, but he expressed optimism for the early signing period.

“I’m really excited,” Martin said. “Obviously, I’ll speak about this next Monday, but I expect to have a couple, definitely two, maybe three that I’ll expound on next Monday.

“But I’m really, really happy with the people that are going to be jumping on board.”

The Gamecocks remain involved with 6-foot-5 prospect Desmond Claude of New Haven, Connecticut and 7-foot-1 Christian Reeves from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia for this class.
