South Carolina freshman guard Devin Carter entered the transfer portal Monday, a team spokesperson confirmed to The State.

Carter later posted on Twitter that he would be leaving the school.

Carter, Frank Martin’s prized recruit in the 2021-22 class, established himself as a key player and go-to scorer in his first season with the Gamecocks.

Walk-on guard Mike Green entered the portal later Monday afternoon, according to Verbal Commits. Carter and Green are the fifth and sixth Gamecocks to enter the portal since USC fired Martin and replaced him with Chattanooga’s Lamont Paris.

The son of long-time NBA player Anthony Carter, Devin Carter finished fourth on the team with 9 points per game while adding 3.8 rebounds. He averaged 18.7 minutes per contest and made seven starts at point guard while veteran Jermaine Couisnard was nursing injuries.

A 6-foot-3 guard out of Miami, Carter should be a commodity among Power 5 schools in the portal given his NBA bloodlines and productive freshman season. Unlike most guards of his size, he has the vertical leaping ability to play above the rim, and he thrives by using a quick first step to slash toward the basket.

As with any player who enters the portal, Carter will have the option to return to USC if he doesn’t find the right fit elsewhere.
