Former USC men’s basketball guard Devin Carter transfers to Providence
Another former South Carolina men’s basketball player has found his next destination.
Freshman guard Devin Carter announced his commitment to Providence in a tweet Sunday. He announced his departure from the Gamecocks’ program on March 28, following the firing of 10-year coach Frank Martin and hiring of Lamont Paris from Chattanooga.
The 6-foot-3 guard out of Miami was Martin’s prized recruit from the 2021-22 class. He averaged 9.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his one season at USC.
Carter told On3’s Joe Tipton his conversations with Providence head coach Ed Cooley played a key role in his decision. He chose the Friars, who play in the Big East, over Arkansas, LSU, Oregon, UConn and UNLV, the other schools that rounded out his top six, per On3.
“Coach Cooley has easily recruited me the hardest that I’ve ever been recruited and that stood out,” Carter said to On3. “The relationship I made with him in such a short timespan is crazy. I can’t wait to put on a Friar uniform and get started.”
This marks the second straight offseason a Gamecock has joined Cooley’s squad. Last year, Justin Minaya transferred to Providence as a graduate student and played a pivotal role for the Friars this season.
Carter was one of seven Gamecocks to depart the program after the 2021-22 season and is the fourth to land at a new school after entering the transfer portal. Ta’Quan Woodley and Wildens Leveque both transferred to join Martin at his new coaching destination at UMass earlier this month.
