Lamont Paris’ Gamecocks fortify frontcourt with transfer from the Big Ten

South Carolina men’s basketball has reeled in another transfer player — a big man from Belgium.

On Wednesday, former Illinois forward Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk announced on Twitter that he would transfer to the Gamecocks. Bosmans-Verdonk is a 6-foot-8 forward who has played sparingly for the Illini, averaging 6.4 minutes in 41 career games.

Originally from Lommel, Belgium, Bosmans-Verdonk was a former four-star recruit who missed the bulk of his freshman season of college because of a foot injury. New USC Lamont Paris has familiarity with players in the Big Ten from his time as a Wisconsin assistant, and his Chattanooga Mocs played against Illinois in the NCAA tournament this past March.

Assistant coaches Tanner Bronson and Eddie Shannon had both said that they were looking for another big man to add depth to the room along with returners Josh Gray, Tre-Vaughn Minott and Ja’Von Benson, and Bosmans-Verdonk would appear to fit that bill.

The Gamecocks have lost eight players to the transfer portal this offseason and have now made five new additions.
