The South Carolina men’s basketball team is losing its first player of the offeason to the transfer portal.

Junior center Tre-Vaughn Minott is expected to enter the portal Monday, a team source confirmed. Monday was the first day that the NCAA transfer portal officially opens to all players. It’s open for 60 days.

Minott appeared in seven games this season and hit one field goal. In his three seasons with the Gamecocks, he appeared in 29 games and averaged 1.8 points and 1.6 rebounds.

The 6-foot-11 Minott, a native of Montreal who last attended the NBA Academy Latin America, was recruited by former coach Frank Martin and joined the team in January of the 2020-21 season.

Minott originally was in the 2020 class, but he reclassified for 2021, and that led to more big-time interest in him from such aschools as USC, Clemson, Arizona State, Butler and New Mexico.

South Carolina just finished the first season under new coach Lamont Paris and went 11-21.

The Gamecocks have only one departing senior on the roster in Hayden Brown.
