USC Upstate’s Brit Harris out of hospital after scary fall against South Carolina

USC Upstate junior guard Brit Harris suffered what appeared to be a serious injury during Saturday’s game against South Carolina after a hard fall on a dunk attempt.

The injury occurred on a fast break in the first half when Harris elevated for a dunk, but tilted backward in midair, appearing to land on his neck. He remained motionless on the Colonial Life Arena court as medical personnel rushed to assist.

He appeared to have movement in his arms as he was taken off the arena floor on a stretcher.

According a South Carolina spokesman after the game, Harris was stabilized and coherent when he left the arena. He was taken to a local hospital for additional testing. Less than an hour after the game, his mother Danielle Harris posted via X that Harris was “up and talking.”

And late Saturday night, USC Upstate posted this encouraging update on its X account: “We are thankful to report that after evaluation by the fine staff @theprismahealth Richland Hospital, @UpstateMBB Brit Harris has been discharged, is back in Spartanburg and on the road to recovery. On behalf of his family and teammates, we appreciate the concern and well wishes expressed for Brit throughout the day.”

The dunk cut South Carolina’s lead to 28-19 with just over five minutes left in the half. Harris had four points and three rebounds.

Harris is USC Upstate’s second-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points. He started 10 of USC Upstate’s 13 games this season. This is his first season with the team after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons with Grand Valley State, a Division II school in Michigan.
