Luck of the draw
South Carolina didn’t win much in SEC play this season, finishing 2-16 in the conference.
Luckily for the Gamecocks, one of those two wins came against their SEC Tournament opening-round opponent Arkansas. The Gamecocks won 72-53 back on March 1 at Colonial Life Arena.
Not only that, but USC has beaten Arkansas three straight times for the first time in program history, including a second-round SEC Tournament win last year. The Razorbacks lead the series overall (23-18).
Before their regular-season finale, the Gamecocks had five possible opponents for the tournament’s opener. Drawing Arkansas might be the most fortunate option.
Gamecocks’ SEC Tournament history
The Gamecocks have never won an SEC Tournament title in program history. They’ve made it to the championship game twice, losing to Kentucky in 1998 and Florida in 2006.
South Carolina has an overall record of 22-32 in the SEC Tournament since joining the conference in the 1991-92 season. Lamont Paris has a record of 1-2 in the tournament as head coach at USC. The lone win came against Arkansas last season in the second round.
The Gamecocks are 7-11 in SEC Tournament games played in Nashville dating back to 2001. Bridgestone Arena hasn’t been kind to the Gamecocks in recent years, as they are 1-6 since 2016.
