Following the conclusion if its season, the South Carolina men’s basketball team is losing its first player to the transfer portal.

Guard Austin Herro will enter the transfer portal, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The State on Thursday. Herro is the first member of this year’s team to enter the portal but definitely won’t be the last as the Gamecocks’ roster is expected to go through a big makeover for next week.

Herro, though, can’t officially enter the portal until Monday, when the 30-day transfer portal window opens for non-graduates.

Herro, the younger brother of NBA guard Tyler Herro, joined the Gamecocks as a walk-on two years ago before earning a scholarship this season. The Wisconsin native appeared in 10 games for the Gamecocks this season with his lone points coming against Florida.

Herro was a three-star prospect coming out of Whitnall High School and helped his school to a state championship.

South Carolina will lose three players to graduation - Jacobi Wright, Jamarii Thomas and Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk. Collin Murray-Boyles also might leave early for the NBA Draft.
