South Carolina starting guard enters transfer portal

Just hours after South Carolina gained a guard in the transfer portal, as Meechie Johnson announced his return to the Gamecocks, it lost another.

Guard Jamarii Thomas has entered the transfer portal, according to a report by On3 Sports.

Last season was his fourth in college and, while he’s out of eligibility, he’s seeking a waiver for a fifth season, per a team source.

The news comes as South Carolina is loading up its back court, adding Johnson and North Dakota transfer Treysen Eaglestaff after already signing freshmen Eli Ellis and Grant Polk.

In his one season at South Carolina, Thomas started 26 games while finishing with the second-highest scoring average on the team (13.2 ppg). And when Thomas missed time with an injury in January, South Carolina’s turnovers spiked — notably in a close loss to Florida, when the Gamecocks severely struggled to break a press and turned it over 16 times.

Prior to his time at South Carolina, Thomas spent two years at UNC-Wilmington before transferring to Norfolk State in 2023.
