A former Gamecock with an NBA connection has announced his next school.

Former South Carolina men’s basketball player Austin Herro has committed to the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, he announced via Instagram on Friday.

Herro is the younger brother of Tyler Herro, an NBA All-Star guard with the Miami Heat. The younger Herro played two seasons at USC and appeared in 10 games for coach Lamont Paris’ team during the 2024-25 season.

He played just 14 total minutes and scored two points on the season. Herro was a walk-on for 2023-24 and redshirted before being placed on scholarship last year.

He entered the transfer portal on April 20.

St. Thomas is a Division I school located in St. Paul, Minnesota. The men’s basketball team competes in the Summit League with teams such as Omaha (the league’ NCAA Tournament auto-bid this season), North Dakota State and South Dakota State.

St. Thomas jumped from Division III to Division I competition starting in 2021.

It’ll be a little closer to home for Herro, who’s a Milwaukee native. The younger Herro was an unranked recruit coming out of high school but picked South Carolina partially because of his family’s previous relationship with Paris.

Paris helped recruit Tyler Herro when he was an assistant at Wisconsin and Herro was one of the top high school recruits in the country. Herro verbally committed to the Badgers (his hometown school) but later decommitted, partially because Paris left to become Chattanooga’s coach. He wound up playing at Kentucky instead.

Tyler Herro, 25, averaged a career-high 23.9 points per game for the Heat this season and was named an All-Star for the first time in his NBA career. He was previously the league’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2021-22 and has played in two NBA Finals.

Austin Herro was one of seven USC players who entered the transfer portal this spring. Paris and the Gamecocks have reloaded with 11 combined newcomers, between transfer portal recruits (six) and high school recruits (five).
