Bruce Shingler joining Gamecock basketball
Frank Martin’s not just adding players these days.
Martin filled the vacancy on his coaching staff on Saturday with Towson’s Bruce Shingler. Shingler, an excellent recruiter with ties in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, served under Martin for one season at Kansas State.
“Bruce is one of the bright young stars in this business,” Martin said for Shingler’s bio at Towson. “He is a former high school teacher and coach who has a tremendous rapport with kids.”
ESPN first reported the news and a source close to USC confirmed it.
Shingler just finished his third season at Towson, where the Tigers went 20-13. In his first season, Towson had the biggest turnaround in Division I and the Tigers won 25 games in his second.
Shingler served as head coach at Bladensburg (Md.) High and his team finished 12th in the Washington Post’s final poll. He coached the DC Assault AAU team and had several standout players – Michael Beasley, Wally Judge, Quinn Cook and approximately 40 other D-I players.
A graduate of St. Augustine’s, Shingler started for four years and averaged six points and seven-plus assists.
He replaces Lamont Evans, who left USC to join Brad Underwood’s staff at Oklahoma State.
