Raymond Doby won’t return to USC basketball

As expected, rising sophomore Raymond Doby will not return to South Carolina.

“Unfortunately, as our end-of-year meetings continue to happen, Raymond Doby and I agreed that a change of scenery would be good for him,” coach Frank Martin said in a statement on Wednesday. “Ray is a fine young man, and we wish him nothing but success.”

Doby’s status had been cloudy since March 26, when he was cited for a first-offense possession of one ounce or less of marijuana or 10 grams or less of hash. Then-freshmen Eric Cobb and Jamall Gregory were also charged with the same offense on the same date.

Cobb and Gregory, along with Chris Silva, TeMarcus Blanton and Marcus Stroman, were indefinitely suspended from the team on March 15, just before the Gamecocks began the NIT.

Cobb and Gregory were arrested on March 17 for property crimes involving a BB gun, and Martin announced on April 4 that the two would not return. Doby, who was not involved with the BB gun incidents, was being internally disciplined when the report of his citation rose on April 13, according to a team spokesperson.

When Martin signed five players in the spring to raise USC’s amount of scholarship players to 14, one over the NCAA-mandated limit, Doby’s status looked to be on thin ice. USC made the announcement on Wednesday.

The departure gets the Gamecocks down to 13 scholarships, including Silva, Blanton and Stroman. The three remain indefinitely suspended, according to Martin at a booster-club appearance on May 5.

Doby, a 6-foot-6 forward from Cahokia, Ill., averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 16 games. He did not start a game.

Martin also wrapped the recruiting class on Wednesday. Freshmen Sedee Keita, Rakym Felder, Khadim Gueye and Maik-Kalev Kotsar plus sophomore Hassani Gravett and redshirt junior Kory Holden will report to USC over the summer. Holden, a transfer from Delaware, will sit out this season due to NCAA rules and have two remaining seasons of eligibility.
