USC Recruiting

Bryce Thompson moves closer to commitment, it just won’t be this weekend

Bryce Thompson won’t be making his college decision this weekend after all.

Thompson said in a text message to The State newspaper on Friday evening that he won’t be committing Sunday, as previously he hoped to do.

The Dutch Fork senior said Friday after practice he has completed two summer school classes and was going to talk things over with his family. Thompson didn’t give a time frame for when he will make his choice.

South Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia Tech were the schools on Thompson’s list. He decommitted from the Hokies in June after attending a USC camp, and the Gamecocks have ratcheted up their interest since then. He was at USC last Saturday.

Thompson said earlier this month that while USC has been on him hard, he wasn’t hearing as much from Virginia Tech and N.C. State.

The Gamecocks are recruiting him as a defensive back but he also can play receiver.

“Coach (Travaris) Robinson is one of the best defensive back coaches in the nation,” Thompson said. “And (head) coach Will Muschamp is the safeties coach and is going to be right with you if you play the safety position.

“It would probably be good to play at USC because it is close to home and all my friends and family will be there. But I don’t know where I’m going to go yet though.”

Thompson played at Ben Lippen last year and scored the game-winning touchdown in the SCISA 3A championship game. He had 1,819 yards total offense, 24 TDs last year and three interceptions on defense.
