USC commit to have season-ending surgery

Wyatt Campbell’s season has ended earlier than expected.

The Lugoff-Elgin offensive lineman and South Carolina commit missed Friday’s playoff game against Dreher and will have surgery Tuesday for a torn meniscus that he injured in a scrimmage against Blythewood.

Campbell, who announced this week he wouldn’t play in the Shrine Bowl, hoped to play Friday and through rest of the playoffs. But after meeting with USC doctors for an MRI, it revealed more damage to the cartilage of his left knee and he was advised to shut it down.

“Yeah, I was real disappointed but it is the best thing for my health and my future. It was hard,” Campbell said Friday.

After surgery Tuesday at Providence Hospital, Campbell will be homebound for two weeks and then start the rehab process. He will enroll at USC on Jan. 10 and continue his rehab there.
