He’s ‘a mauler’: NC lineman makes decision to sign with Gamecocks
South Carolina football came into the early signing period with a few potential targets still in play.
On Wednesday, they secured another one.
Charlotte lineman Jovaughn Gwyn picked the Gamecocks over N.C. State. It wasn’t clear if he’d sign Wednesday until Will Muschamp announced he’d signed.
Everything had been quiet through the day as to if he’d even sign. As that news broke, the school also announced defensive backs Israel Mukuamu and Jonathan Gipson had signed.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound, two-way lineman from Harding University High School is a three-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s No. 418 nationally, No. 15 in North Carolina and the No. 20 offensive guard.
He was part of a team that went 14-1 and won its first state title since the 1950s.
“Really a mauler, really a tough kid,” Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Friedman said. “Offense and defense, really a tough kid who you can depend on as an interior lineman on the offensive or defensive side. I expect him obviously to play offensive line, probably guard, potentially center depending on how the team needs him.
“He’s a guy the offensive line is going to be able to be built around.”
