He wants to be South Carolina’s kicker of the future. He just committed to Gamecocks
South Carolina football has its latest commitment, with kicker Mitch Jeter pledging to the Gamecocks on Saturday just a few days after receiving an offer.
USC coach Will Muschamp tweeted his customary “#SpursUp!” announcing a commitment on Saturday, and Jeter made it official Saturday night, tweeting out his commitment. He and his family were on an unofficial visit to South Carolina this weekend.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Jeter said Saturday night. “I get to live my dreams out by playing football in the SEC. It’s super exciting and I’m super honored and grateful for the staff to believe in me.”
Jeter, though he is set to graduate in 2020, will wait to officially sign with the Gamecocks so that his scholarship will count towards the class of 2021, he said. USC is set at kicker for the 2020 season, with veteran Parker White entering his senior season. But there might be some opening with kickoff specialist Will Tommie moving on.
“I’d compete for the job my freshman year on kickoffs and field goals, and they want me to get in the environment so by the time of my redshirt freshman year I can take over the field goal and kickoff job.”
This season, the Salisbury, North Carolina, displayed a strong leg with a long field goal of 57 yards, and all of his deep kickoffs went for touchbacks. He was 8-10 on his field goal attempts.
Kohl’s Kicking rates Jeter as a five-star prospect and the No. 24 kicker in his class. The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder will mark two special teams commits in close succession for USC — punter Kai Kroeger, rated No. 3 at his position in the country, is part of the 2020 class.
The first signing day for the class of 2020 is this Wednesday.
