Versatile, local running back/receiver commits to Gamecocks as walk-on

For the Blythewood High School football team, if there was part of the stat sheet to be stuffed, Brandon Edwards was probably doing it.

Now the 5-foot-10, 185-pound running back/receiver is set to join South Carolina football.

Edwards tweeted Monday morning he’ll join the Gamecocks. He had posted Jan. 18 he’d been told he’d have an offer to walk-on.

As a senior, Edwards was a do-everything player for the Bengals. He got 605 rushing yards on 7.5 per carry and added 401 more yards through the air. Overall, he scored 12 touchdowns on offense.

At linebacker, he was a disruptor, piling up 104 tackles and 23 for loss.

The Gamecocks are turning over most of their running back room with Rico Dowdle, Mon Denson, Tavien Feaster, Caleb Kinlaw and A.J. Turner moving on. They projects to still have long-time walk-on Slade Carroll, a Lexington product who played in two games in 2018 but didn’t see action last season.

The scholarship backs for next season should be redshirt sophomore Deshaun Fenwick, sophomore Kevin Harris, four-star freshman MarShawn Lloyd, three-star freshman Rashad Amos and likely junior college transfer Zaquandre White, who started his career at Florida State.
