South Carolina offers son of one of its assistant coaches
When Mike Bobo took the job of offensive coordinator at South Carolina, it meant his kids could move a little closer to family mostly concentrated in Georgia. It also meant his son Drew, a rising football prospect on the offensive line, would play his junior season in Columbia.
He’ll get a chance to play more than the next two years in town, as he tweeted he’d received an offer from the Gamecocks on Friday night.
It’s his third offer, along with Tennessee and Maryland.
Drew Bobo will play for Hammond, the school where Will Muschamp’s son Jackson went, this coming season, assuming it’s not disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. The Gamecocks got a pair of blue chip defensive linemen from the Skyhawks, coached by former Gamecock Erik Kimrey, in Jordan Burch and Alex Huntley.
The Gamecocks also have an offer out to Hammond tailback C.J. Stokes.
Drew Bobo played tackle for Resurrection Christian High School in Loveland, Colorado last season. He was part of a team that went 10-2 and averaged 36.5 points per game. At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Drew Bobo has been working the camp circuit in recent weeks.
He took home a top performer award from the Top Gun Camp last week in Naples. He also trains with former Gamecocks lineman Cory Helms.
Bobo’s father was a longtime quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at Georgia, working under Mark Richt. The elder Bobo took his first head coaching job at Colorado State, but was let go after five years and consecutvie losing seasons.
Mike Bobo has been tasked with jumpstarting a Gamecocks attack that struggled mightily last season with a freshman quarterback and a paucity of effective weapons.
