South Carolina adds defensive line commit
South Carolina has added a 19th piece to its increasingly full 2022 class.
Three-star defensive lineman D’Andre Martin of Durham, North Carolina announced his flip from Virginia Tech to USC on Tuesday via Twitter. Martin decommitted from the Hokies on Sunday before announcing his change to the Gamecocks on Tuesday.
He is rated the No. 32 player in the Tar Heel State, according to the 247Sports Composite.
He picked South Carolina over a group of finalists that initially included Virginia Tech, Duke, Florida State and Tennessee. Martin visited South Carolina during Saturday’s win over Auburn and just days after Justin Fuente was fired at Virginia Tech.
The Gamecocks have now added five defensive lineman in their 2022 class. Martin joins three-star prospects Jamaal Whyce (Miami, Florida), Felix Hixon (Jackson, Georgia), Bryan Thomas Jr. (Winter Garden, Florida) and Demetrius Watson (North Charleston).
Martin is from Durham but attends Life Christian Academy in South Chesterfield, Virginia.
He becomes the first player from North Carolina to commit to the Gamecocks since Shane Beamer took over as head coach in December. USC has also received 2022 commitments from players in Delaware, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Texas.
South Carolina’s 2022 class ranked No. 21 nationally and No. 9 in the Southeastern Conference ahead of Martin’s pledge, according to the 247Sports Composite.
