South Carolina quarterback commit helps team to Delaware state championship

Braden Davis finished off his high school career in style — with a state championship.
The South Carolina quarterback commit helped his Middletown High School to the Delaware Class 3A championship on Saturday.
Davis ran for a TD and threw the game-winning touchdown pass in the 28-22 win over Smyrna at the University of Delaware.
It was Middletown’s first championship since 2012 and eighth overall for the school. It was its first at the Class 3A level.
Trailing 22-21 in the fourth quarter, Middletown drove down the field and faced a fourth-and-goal. The Cavaliers went for it and Davis hit Zachary Caldwell for the three-yard TD to make it 28-22.
“Just trying to find a little bit of time, they kinda switched their outside linebackers and sent a different blitz,” Davis told Delaware Online. “So I just had to wait for my matchup. I knew my guys would get open. I just had to sit in there and make that throw.”
Davis finished 15-for-25 passing for 216 yards.
The win caps off a strong senior season for Davis. The senior won the Delaware’s Gatorade Player of the Year earlier this week. Davis entered the game with 1,954 yards passing and 23 touchdowns.
Davis has one more high school football game to play in before enrolling in January at South Carolina. He will play in the Under Armour All-American game in Orlando on Jan. 2.
