South Carolina adds athletic Georgia receiver to 2023 recruiting class

South Carolina landed a second pass-catcher for its 2023 class on Sunday.

Three-star receiver CJ Adams announced his commitment to USC over offers from Maryland, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Adams is rated the No. 784 player and No. 105 receiver in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

He primarily played quarterback until his junior season, when he transitioned to receiver. In his first year out wide, he finished the campaign with a team-high 936 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 54 catches. Adams also added another 133 yards and four more scores on the ground.

The Georgia native was on an official visit in Columbia over the weekend after visiting Maryland on June 22. He also visited for South Carolina’s spring game in April.

He previously said that wide receivers coach Justin Stepp likes him for his size and his big-play potential.

“He likes my physicality, my ability to run and move and play-make,” Adams said. “I would fit good in their offense because all they do is throw the ball. ... And coach said I’d be more like an athlete, an all-around-the-field type of guy. Coach Stepp feels my physicality and my ability to be an athlete and play all over is very good.”

South Carolina previously added four-star athlete Kelton Henderson (Florida) to its 2023 class. Henderson is expected to play receiver at the next level.

USC currently has commitments from five different states and Washington, D.C.. Adams is the third player from Georgia to pledge to the Gamecocks in a class that also includes Peach State products three-star offensive lineman Trovon Baugh and three-star safety Jalon Kilgore also hail from Peach State.

South Carolina now has 10 players committed in a 2023 class that ranks No. 41 nationally and No. 6 in the Southeastern Conference, per 247Sports.
