South Carolina football lost one of its commitments for the Class of 2023 on Sunday.

Defensive back Cam Upshaw announced Sunday via Twitter that he is decommitting from the Gamecocks and opening up his recruitment.

Upshaw, who plays at Taylor County in Florida, committed to the Gamecocks on June 12.

“I would like to thank Coach Beamer and Gamecock Country for allowing me to be apart of such a great program and welcoming with open arms,” Upshaw wrote. “I thank everyone apart of Gamecock Football for the support thus far.

“.. After many conversations with family, friends and mentors I have decided to de-commit from the University of South Carolina. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I look forward to doing things the right way.”

Upshaw’s decision gives USC 13 announced commitments for the Class of 2023 — two of those are defensive backs, and two others listed as athletes could also be DBs in college. Dorman offensive lineman Markee Anderson is announcing his choice on Sunday afternoon, and USC is in his final four schools.

When reached via Twitter for a deeper explanation about his decision, Upshaw said: “South Carolina is still an option and as of right now I don’t have any other schools talking to me. I just want to commit how I had originally planned to, commit during a big home game pep rally, probably the second or third home game.”

Asked if he might announce again for USC, Upshaw responded, “More than likely.” And are the Gamecock coaches on board with this? “Oh yeah, for sure.”

Upshaw played last season at Gadsen County High School, where he saw time at quarterback and on defense, where he was being recruited to play for the Gamecocks.

On defense, he had 52 tackles and an interception. On offense, he threw for 490 yards, six touchdowns and also ran for 268 yards and a TD.
