Top basketball player from Minnesota commits to Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks
Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks are building next year’s squad.
Four-star guard Tessa Johnson from Minnesota announced her decision Wednesday morning to commit to South Carolina’s 2023 recruiting class. She also considered Minnesota and Baylor.
Johnson attends Saint Michael Albertville High and is the 25th-ranked recruit on ESPN, boasting a 95 scouts grade. She’s regarded as the best player in Minnesota.
South Carolina won the 2022 national championship in Minnesota, when it beat UConn 64-49.
“Minnesota is the gift that keeps on giving,” Staley wrote on Twitter Wednesday.
She’ll be part of South Carolina team that will likely lose seniors Zia Cooke and Brea Beal after the season, giving the team more guard depth for next year.
She joins four-star wing Sahnya Jah in the Gamecocks class. Jah announced her college decision last week for USC.
