Gamecocks lose defensive commitment from future recruiting class
The South Carolina football team lost one of its two commitments in the 2024 recruiting class on Tuesday.
Three-star defensive back Karson Hobbs announced he was breaking his pledge to USC via Twitter. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound corner is from Cincinnati, Ohio and was offered by the Gamecocks on June 8.
Hobbs announced on social media: “I would like to thank South Carolina and the coaches for overwhelming love and support they expressed to me after my acceptance into the Gamecocks community. I would also like to thank my family and friends for their support during this recruitment process. With that being said, I have decided to decommit from The University of South Carolina.”
By Wednesday morning, Hobbs revealed a verbal commitment to Notre Dame. Hobbs this season has 19 tackles, six pass break-ups and an interception at Moeller High School.
Hobbs committed to South Carolina on July 29, saying: “I feel like for my dreams and to get where I want to be in life, I think coming here would really be my best bet, coming to play in the SEC and under coach (Torrian) Gray. Seeing all the people that coach Gray sent to the NFL, it was kind of like a no-brainer — like, OK, yeah, this is where I want to be.”
He originally chose USC over reported offers from Akron, Kentucky, Marshall and West Virginia.
Quarterback Dante Reno is now the Gamecocks’ lone commitment for the future class.
