‘They are pushing hard.’ Gamecocks in pursuit of talented South Florence quarterback
South Carolina football hasn’t stopped in its pursuit of LaNorris Sellers.
The South Florence senior quarterback said Friday that he still hears frequently from Gamecocks coaches Shane Beamer and Marcus Satterfield, and director of player personnel Taylor Edwards.
“I have been hearing a lot from USC,” Sellers said after helping the Bruins to a 43-27 win over A.C. Flora in the Class 4A playoffs. “They have been hitting me up a lot. We talk every day. They text and see how I am doing.”
Satterfield, USC’s offensive coordinator and QBs coach, attended South Florence’s playoff game against Myrtle Beach on Oct. 14, and the Gamecocks extended a scholarship offer a week later. USC had the Class of 2023 recruit on campus for camps during the summer.
Sellers said he has been to two South Carolina football games this fall.
USC doesn’t have a QB committed for the 2023 class, though it’s been discussed that Class of 2024 commit Dante Reno could reclassify to this year’s group.
“They are pushing hard,” Sellers said. “I love coach Beamer, I love coach Satterfield. They are good people and coaches.”
It remains to be seen if USC’s push will have an effect on Sellers’ ultimate decision. He also is hearing from Coastal Carolina and Georgia.
Sellers has been committed to Syracuse since March. He originally committed to Virginia in July 2021 but decommitted in January after the Cavaliers made a coaching change.
Sellers plans to sign during the December signing period and enroll in college in January. Syracuse remains atop his list right now.
“They built a relationship from Year One. When I got hurt last season, they stuck with me,” Sellers said of Syracuse. “It is right for me to stick with them.”
Sellers had his junior season cut short because of injury after four games. This season, he’s put up big numbers and is a Mr. Football finalist in helping South Florence to its first state championship appearance.
South Florence will play Northwestern for the Class 4A title at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Benedict College’s Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia.
Sellers finished with 228 yards rushing, five touchdowns and also threw for 140 yards in Friday’s semifinal win over A.C. Flora. Coming into the game, he had thrown for 2,548 yards, rushed for 921 and had 56 total touchdowns.
“LaNorris Sellers is the best football player in the state,” South Florence coach Drew Marlowe said Friday. “If he doesn’t win Mr. Football, you better get rid of the award because it is garbage. He made some critical throws and runs and played great.”
