5-star recruit Dylan Stewart commits to South Carolina
South Carolina’s 2024 recruiting class received a major jolt Tuesday with a commitment from five-star edge rusher Dylan Stewart.
Stewart — who stands at 6-foot-5, 235 pounds — is the No. 10 player nationally in 247Sports’ Composite rankings that factor in all networks. He had 16 sacks during his junior season at Friendship Collegiate in Washington, D.C.
He revealed his commitment with a graphic and a simple post to Twitter, saying: “COMMITTED #ITSOVER”
His announcement gives South Carolina five-star commitments in back-to-back classes, with elite wide receiver Nyck Harbor signing with the Gamecocks for 2023. It also lifted South Carolina to No. 16 overall as a recruiting class for 2024, per 247Sports Composite.
“HUGE win for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks!” On3 recruiting analyst Chad Simmons said via Twitter.
Aside from South Carolina (where he has visited multiple times, including this past weekend), Stewart took official visits to Georgia, Miami and Ohio State. Those three schools, USC and Maryland were in his top five. He previously said he wanted to announce his commitment before his senior season starts.
Stewart took an official visit to USC the weekend of June 23, telling Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC afterward: “I’ve been impressed by how open Beamer is and how the coaching staff treats their players. I really like the relationships I’ve got with the coaches and my comfortability with the players, and the defensive scheme and what I’d be doing. They would use my athletic ability pretty well.”
Over the weekend, other USC class of 2024 commits pleaded with Stewart to pick the Gamecocks. South Carolina had yet to land a defensive lineman for that cycle.
“Come here man, we need you. Iron sharpens iron. We got the tackles, now we need a defensive end,” Thompson told The State on Sunday, recalling his message to Stewart. “We can help each other become great, especially at the next level. It would be a great get for us.”
