South Carolina loses 4-star corner to Maryland flip on signing day

Four-star cornerback and former South Carolina commitment Braydon Lee will sign with Maryland, he revealed Wednesday during a signing day ceremony.

Lee verbally committed to South Carolina in April. The 6-foot, 163-pound Upper Marlboro, Maryland product played high school football with current Gamecock Desmond Umeozulu and was another example of Beamer’s success recruiting in the DMV area. Lee is ranked as the No. 25 cornerback in the nation.

Lee played high school football roughly 10 miles from Maryland’s campus in College Park. He took multiple unofficial visits to the Terrapins over the years, even after his commitment to the Gamecocks. He planned to officially visit Maryland ahead of the early signing day.

Lee told InsideMDSports on Oct. 6 that he was “100% a Gamecock.”

“But,” Lee added, “like I told Coach Locks and Coach Baker, the doors are completely open for them. So I’m just wanting to embrace everything they got to show me and just keep witnessing it all myself. So I would say it’s just a Maryland-South Carolina thing going right now.”

After he gave his verbal commitment to USC earlier this year, Lee said Maryland continued to recruit him as if he remained uncommitted.

Maryland also flipped South Carolina commit Jaishawn Barham two years ago on signing day.

Barham was a four-star recruit and the No. 8 linebacker prospect in the class of 2022. He had committed to USC on Dec. 11 and was the Gamecocks’ highest-rated commit in the class. He was also, at the time, the highest-rated commit ever under Shane Beamer at South Carolina. Barham has since entered the transfer portal.

Lee announced via X (formerly Twitter) that he will graduate high school next week and early enroll in college next month.

“Would like to thank all the fans, media, and coaches that have stuck with me through this process,” he also wrote in the aforementioned post. “Time to make it official! #GodDid”
