USC Recruiting

Son of former NFL star ‘blessed’ to receive South Carolina football offer

The South Carolina football staff has been busy on the road recruiting this week, extending offers to prospects.

The Gamecocks extended one to a player with NFL pedigree on Thursday as Weddington (NC) sophomore linebacker Thomas Davis Jr. announced he’d received a scholarship offer. Davis is the son of Thomas Davis Sr., who played 16 seasons in the NFL and 14 with the Carolina Panthers.

USC defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Clayton White and defensive ends coach Sterlings Lucas were the coaches who reached out to Davis, a rising high school junior.

“I am very blessed to be offered by them and I love the program,” Davis told The State on Thursday. “I look forward to checking out the campus and building a relationship with the coaches”

Davis was one of two Weddington players offered on Thursday. Sophomore defensive lineman Aiden Harris also was offered by the Gamecocks.

Davis is one of the top prospects in NC for the Class of 2026. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the fifth-best prospect in NC for his class and No. 67 nationally. He is the third-ranked linebacker prospect in the country.

Davis’ other offers include Auburn, Miami, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Indiana, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Boston College and Charlotte.

Davis, who also saw action on varsity as a freshman, finished his 2023 sophomore year with 92 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and seven quarterback hurries. He had nine tackles, four for loss and a sack in Weddington’s win over eventual SC 5A champion Dutch Fork, 17-14, on Sept. 22.

Weddington won the NC Class 4A championship this season with a 56-21 win over Hoggard. It was the school’s first state title in 4A with three others coming in Class 3A.
