Top football recruit in Gamecocks’ 2025 class flips commitment to SEC foe
South Carolina has lost its highest ranked football commit for the Class of 2025.
Cornerback Shamari Earls announced on Sunday he is flipping his pledge from South Carolina to Georgia.
”I would like to thank Coach (Torrian) Gray, Coach (Shane) Beamer,” Earls wrote on X, “and the entire South Carolina staff and fan base for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of their family, but at this time I need to make the best decision for me.”
Earls, from Thomas Dale, Virginia, committed to Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks, about 90 minutes before USC’s spring game on April 20.
Earls initially picked USC over Tennessee, Alabama, Texas A&M and Georgia. He officially visited Georgia last month along with Michigan.
The 247Sports Composite ranks Earls as a four-star prospect and the No. 102 overall player in the country for the Class of 2025. 247Sports and On3 also have him as a four-star and a top 70 recruit on their in-house rankings.
Earls is the second recent decommit for the Gamecocks. Class of 2026 quarterback commit Landon Duckworth, who’d pledged to USC last fall as a high school sophomore, announced last week he would be opening up his recruiting.
Last season, Earls had 16 solo tackles, a trio of interceptions and four pass breakups. At receiver, he caught 29 passes for 715 yards and eight touchdowns.
Earls’ flip leaves USC with 16 commits for the Class of 2025.
