South Carolina added another in-state commitment to its Class of 2026 recruiting class.

South Pointe defensive back J’zavian Currence committed to the Gamecocks on Thursday. Currence is the fifth commit for Shane Beamer and USC for Class of 2026 and second from South Pointe. Offensive lineman Anthony Baxter committed to USC on May 5.

The Gamecocks have done well recruiting the Rock Hill area and South Pointe High School over the years with commitments from Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gillmore and Devonte Holloman.

“They reach out almost every day,” Currence told Phil Kornblut earlier this year. “Good to hear from Coach (Torrian) Gray, Coach (Shane) Beamer. The inspirational coach (Derrick Moore), he sends me a text keeping me updated with practice and things like that. There’s a lot of love coming from them. Coach Gray talks about my work ethic a lot and things like that. I think I’ll fit in more at safety, but he said he’s going to keep me at corner until he says I go to safety.”

Currence got an offer from the Gamecocks as a freshman in July of 2022 and made several visits including one for the Ole Miss game. He has been one of the most-sought after recruits in the state with offers from Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Oregon, Miami, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida State and Oklahoma among others.

247Sports ranks the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Currence as a four-star prospect and the top-ranked recruit from South Carolina in the Class of 2026. He primarily plays safety for the Stallions but also seen time on offense at receiver and quarterback.

With starting quarterback Cam McMillon out early in the season, Currence made three starts at QB. He threw for 450 yards, seven touchdowns and also rushed for 202 yards and two scores.

As a receiver, Currence has caught nine passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he has eight tackles, seven pass break-ups and a one caused fumble.
