South Carolina football has added a commitment from another top in-state prospect.

Indian Land High senior athlete Sequel Patterson committed to the Gamecocks on Thursday at the finals of the Overtime 7-on-7 finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is the ninth commitment for USC’s 2026 recruiting class.

Patterson revealed his choice by unzipping his sweatshirt with a South Carolina T-shirt underneath it.

“The best stay home,” Patterson said after the announcement. “They made it hard on me. Guys like (receivers) Brian Rowe, Mazeo Bennett, they made it real special for me. Like I said the best stay home.”

Patterson said he knew he would be picking the Gamecocks about a month ago and hopes to help recruit more players to USC, including QB Landon Duckworth.

Patterson has been one of the most sought-after athletes in the state, with offers from Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Florida State and Tennessee. The Gamecocks were one of his final four schools, along with Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia.

The Gamecocks offered the 6-foot, 165-pound Patterson last summer. He made an unofficial visit there in March and took his official visit on June 20.

“South Carolina has always had a special place in my heart with me being from South Carolina,” Patterson said. “Coach Furrey (receivers coach) and head coach Shane Beamer showed nothing but love. I just want to thank them for recruiting me this far.”

247Sports Composite ranks Patterson as a four-star prospect and the eighth-best athlete in the country for Class of 2026. He was originally a member of the Class of 2027 but announced on June 1 that he was reclassifying to the Class of 2026.

Patterson was a versatile player last season for Indian Land, playing receiver, quarterback and defensive back. The Gamecocks are recruiting him as a receiver.

“Explosive athlete, two-way player,” 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins said. “He could be a defensive back but I think he is more of a slot wide receiver. When you look at his entire profile, he checks off box after box. Long jumper, triple jumper, high jumper. He also has a college basketball offer so he can attack the rim off the hardwood. A guy that does it in a variety of different ways and someone that is going to have a chance to make an impact in the SEC.”

Last year, Patterson was an all-state selection and caught 52 passes for 758 yards and also rushed for 441 yards and 14 total touchdowns. On defense, he had 23 tackles, eight pass break-ups and two interceptions.

Patterson also is a standout in basketball, averaging 13.8 points a game. He also finished second in the high jump at the Class 5A Division II track and field championship.
