South Carolina baseball lands commitment from hometown power hitter
South Carolina baseball picked up a commitment Monday from one of the area’s best power hitters.
Lexington High School Class of 2027 first baseman/third baseman Christian Spivey committed to Paul Mainieri and the Gamecocks. Spivey recently took an official visit to South Carolina.
Spivey announced his decision on the Diamond Prospects’ Bullpen Show and his Instagram page. He picked the Gamecocks over Alabama and Virginia Tech, two other schools he visited.
“The biggest deciding factor was it felt like home,” Spivey told The State. “I loved everything about it including the way they go about things, the development, and the coaches were awesome and treated me the best. They covered everything I was looking for into a school.”
Spivey said he grew up a Gamecock fan but that wasn’t the main factor in his decision. He said USC coaches really like his power and also discipline at the plate.
“The biggest thing they like about me is my hitting tools. They love me as a hitter because I have great discipline at the plate and raw power for my age,” Spivey said. “They think it’s hard to find that combo so they love that about me.”
Spivey has been a two-year starter for the Wildcats and was a member of the team’s 2024 state championship team and the 2025 state runner-up squad. This spring, he hit .333 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs, was a Class 5A Division I All-State selection and first-team selection of The State’s all-area team.
As a freshman, Spivey hit .302 with two homers and 26 RBIs. He plays his summer baseball with the Charlotte Panthers out of North Carolina.
“The Gamecocks are getting an elite level hitter that will make an immediate impact on the lineup,” Lexington coach Brian Hucks said. “More importantly he is an incredible young man that is a leader and makes those around him better.”
Spivey becomes the sixth commitment for USC’s 2027 class and second this week. Jax Haynes of Providence High in Charlotte committed to the Gamecocks on Tuesday, a day after Spivey.
Others commits are pitchers Evan Dyett and Gavin Henderson, catcher Jackson Taylor and outfielder Carson Bruce.
