The gem of South Carolina’s 2026 recruiting class has become the epitome of a young man bought into coach Shane Beamer’s culture, someone who’s stayed fiercely loyal through USC’s underwhelming season.

Four-star offensive tackle Darius Gray committed to South Carolina back in August, making his pledge at a time when it was trendy to pick USC.

The program was bringing back perhaps the most-talented quarterback in school history. The head coach just notched an extension after a nine-win season. And the Gamecocks were projected to be in the hunt for the College Football Playoff.

And then everything fell apart. South Carolina finished 4-8. It fired Gray’s lead recruiter, offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley. Beamer’s future is secure for 2026, but beyond that might depend on how the Gamecocks do next season.

“It’s been a little tough, a little bit confusing as well, with like South Carolina and the coaches changing,” Gray told The State . “But it’s been a fun ride, and I’m excited for signing day.”

Gray, a 6-foot-3, 265-pound prospect from Richmond, Virginia, had every excuse to take a look around. And, yet, the only school he visited this season was South Carolina ... not to say that other schools didn’t take their shot at courting Gray.

An influx of schools reached out to Gray following Teasley’s October firing.

“It kind of felt like (my recruitment) was re-opened again,” Gray said. “But I made it pretty clear that I’m gonna stick with South Carolina as long as Coach Beamer is there.”

When Gray signs Wednesday on the December signing day, it will be a massive victory for Beamer and his staff.

Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Gray is the No. 37 prospect in America, the second-best interior offensive lineman in America and the No. 2 player in Virginia.

If he signs with the Gamecocks, he would be their highest-rated signee in the 2026 class and the fourth-highest-rated player inked by Beamer — only behind (in order): edge Dylan Stewart, WR Nyck Harbor and OL Josiah Thompson.

When it came time to make a decision back in August, he chose South Carolina over LSU and Tennessee. The reason? Shane Beamer.

“You would want to go to war for a guy like that, instead of someone who’s all about ball and that’s all they care about,” Gray said of Beamer. “He’s not like that. He cares about the human and their personalities and their feelings. Those type of coaches get you much farther.”

South Carolina surely need Gray’s services.

The Gamecocks gave up an SEC-high 43 sacks this season. Given that, Gray has a chance to come in and contribute as a freshman.

The only setback could be the timing. Gray won’t enroll at South Carolina until the summer — which also means he has plenty of time to gain weight.

Gray — now weighing 265 — dropped almost 20 pounds this year to help St. Christopher’s School and play on the defensive line, in addition to his work as an O-lineman.

South Carolina told Gray they’d like him to try and get to around 290 to 295 pounds before the summer. If that sounds hard, Gray seems to be able to put on weight with the ease of putting on socks.

“Last week I was just trying things out,” Gray said. “I was like, ‘Let’s see how fast I can put on 10 pounds.’ I put on 10 in four days.”

Unlike the majority of offensive linemen trying to pack on pounds, Gray isn’t downing a dozen peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and a few glasses of milk before bed. His diet, he noted, consists of mostly protein shakes, chicken and beef.”

“Last week, I had about 15 tacos in one day,” he said. “Then I had about four pieces of chicken and probably some jambalaya with that. And four protein shakes a day.”

All of that is to say: The real winner of signing day might be the grocery bill of Gray’s parents. No. 2 is probably the Gamecocks, who are getting immediate help at the most-crucial position.
